It can feel like such hard work trying to work out what kind of therapy you need and then work out which therapist is going to be best for you. Working with someone that you feel comfortable with is important, so take your time, this shouldn't be rushed.
The first appointment is about finding out what you would like to work on in therapy, setting goals and then deciding how many sessions might be needed to reach your goals. This could be short term work such as 6 sessions or long term work. I think it is important to have a brief conversation over the phone before booking an appointment to give some thought about what you would like from therapy.
I theraputic approach is integrative incorporating a number of different therapy approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Attachment theory, Psychodynamic, and EMDR and during our first appointment we would discuss which approach would be the most appropriate.
I started my working profession in law but it felt like I was on a treadmill so I change professions and started my 6 year training towards becoming a qualified counsellor. Now with over 18 years of experience working in a number of different settings, including schools, NHS and the private sector I split my time as a workplace counsellor and my private practice. I am an Accredited Counsellor of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy BACP and as an Accredited Counsellor I adhere to the BACP ethical framework.
